-- Reading the Wind --
Most of us are used to reading the wind direction at the race track from the American flag or a wind sock. Both of these point in the direction that the wind is blowing. With the advent of the trailer station, we are introduced to the Weather Vane. A weather vane points in the direction the wind is coming from, exactly the opposite of what we are used to seeing. If the flag or a wind sock is pointing down the track, we have a TAIL wind. If a weather vane is pointing down the track, we have a HEAD wind. Yes, it can be confusing and many people are getting it wrong!

With our Davis trailer stations, the wind arm must be oriented as parallel to the race track and aimed down track. We can then compute the TrueWind from the absolute wind speed and degrees of wind direction. A head wind is represented by a positive number, while a tail wind is represented as a negative (-) number.

Don't be confused by watching the flag or a wind sock and think that your trailer station is reading backwards. If you have it oriented correctly, it will be reading the correct wind direction. Remember, a weather vane points in the opposite direction than you may be used to seeing. See example images below.
